The Weak Shepherd Mentality

I’m always interested when our church leaders speak and so I quickly followed a link my friend had posted and zipped over to Bishop Kevin Farrell’s website to read his latest blog entitled, “The Cowboy Mentality,” (which he just changed the title of BTW).   It’s quite a read.   In a mere eight paragraphs the esteemed leader of the Catholic Church in Dallas manages to prove that he is completely and woefully ignorant and unprepared to be involved in the “Gun Control” debate.   Let’s take it piece by piece.

“Thank God that someone finally has the courage to close the loopholes in our pitiful gun control laws to reduce the number of mass shootings, suicides and killings that have become a plague in our country.”

So we have two parts to this:

  1.  Loopholes
  2. The premise that closing those will reduce this “plague” of shootings.

The gun “loopholes” is a media driven narrative that puts forth the idea that anyone can just run out and get a gun without a background check. In fact, Obama specifically said that criminals can go online and purchase a gun.  We’ve heard over and over about the alleged “gun show loophole.”  The problem is that these “loopholes” do not exist.   Is it possible to get a gun without a background check?  Absolutely.    Is it plentiful and simple to do?  Not at all.  Let me break it down:

Private Sales
In some states you can make a private sale to someone else.  Some.   Even in those states that allow this the current law states that you cannot be buying and purchasing guns for profit without an FFL.  In addition, if you sell a gun to someone and they are a criminal then you could be potentially held liable and absolutely will have the ATF knocking on your door.  Nobody wants this.  Many private sellers require a background check, do written bills of sale with a State ID and/or demand to see a current CHL which proves a background check has been done.  There are not people running around with boxes of guns in their trunks pawning them off on people.   However, even if this was the case then this would ALREADY be illegal!

The Gun Show Loophole
Again, a fear mongering media driven campaign.   When you go to a gun show there are many booths.  Some are made up of FFL dealers and some are private parties.  However, the private parties for the most part sell holsters, flash lights and the like, NOT guns.  If they do sell guns they may have 1 or 2 old personal firearms on their table.  Why?  Because once again, it is ALREADY illegal for a private seller to be selling guns for profit without an FFL!

Now, let’s move to #2, the Bishop’s erroneous premise that closing these alleged loopholes will stop the “plague” of gun violence.    This is quite possibly the most ridiculous part of his article.

  • The vast majority of gun violence happens in urban areas and is related to gangs.
  • The “mass shooting” epidemic is another fear based marketing campaign to scare white people from the suburbs.
  • The vast majority of these “mass shooters” not only bought their guns legally, but they passed a background check.
  • The vast majority of criminals get their guns from straw purchases and theft.

So, what does this logically tell us?  Perhaps we ought to actually enforce the laws that make these things illegal ALREADY.   Are you starting to see a pattern?

There is absolutely zero evidence that enhancing our gun laws and closing these “loopholes” would reduce gun violence at all.  As in ZERO.

There is however, overwhelming evidence that if we enforced the laws which we ALREADY have we could curb the violence.

Here’s the next doozy:

“President Barack Obama’s executive actions, though modest, are first steps….”

Let’s be clear.   President Obama tried to pass these through Congress and failed.  So now he proposes to go around Congress.  Our system of government has what are called “checks and balances” specifically designed to prevent actions like this.  So, what our dear Bishop does is defends this action because, “the end justifies the means” which of course is prohibited according to the Catholic Church CCC 1753.

” in correcting gun laws so weak that they are ludicrous…”

Ahh…but our gun laws are not weak….  they are simply not enforced.  For example, De’Eris Brown who was found guilty of second-degree felony robbery was sentenced to 5 years probation instead of jail time.  One month later he shot a 9 year old girls while she was doing her homework.   If the second degree felony robbery law had been enforced then god ole’ De’Eris would not have been able to take a gun and shoot someone because he would have been busy being raped in prison by another thug.

“Congress has unabashedly sold itself to the gun lobby. If there was ever any doubt, its recent action to kill legislation to ban people on the terrorist no-fly list made it obvious.”

Except that our dear Bishop has swallowed another liberal lie hook, line and sinker.  The “No-Fly list” is yet another way Obama tried to take control and he was shot down by Congress, not because of the “gun lobby,” but because the No-Fly list is completely arbitrary and unconstitutional.

“It is absurd that terrorists, criminals, and mentally unbalanced people can freely and openly buy weapons…”

But they can’t.   Once again, laws already prevent this and furthermore terrorists and criminals do not get their weapons from gun shows or family backyard BBQs.  They steal them, make them or get them with false documentation.  All of which are illegal ALREADY and all of which are currently not enforced.

“…not intended for sport, but designed to kill people.”

The vast amount of shootings happen with pistols, not the dreaded and elusive “assault weapon.”  Pistols…..  But you are correct, most pistols are designed to kill.  They are are also designed and used for “sport.”  All of which is irrelevant of course because the 2nd Amendment gives us the right (which shall not be infringed) to protect ourselves from criminals and tryanny.

The ironic thing is that our dear Bishop refers to the scary “assault weapon” which was designed to kill.  However, the dreaded Bushmaster was actually designed to look like an American military rifle but other than looks is simply a semi-automatic rifle. Furthermore, it was actually developed for “sport” and some of the first ones actually were branded in that fashion.

“Writers of the Second Amendment envisioned smooth bore muskets and not semi-automatic and automatic weapons of war.”

Automatic weapons are illegal unless you are one of the select few dealers who have been approved for a Class 3 license.  And yes, the writers more than likely envisioned “smooth bore muskets” because that is what existed.  However, what they really envisioned was that Americans would never be disarmed and controlled by a tryannical government.   I’m quite certain if our founding fathers were here today they would be personally equipped with AR-15’s and Tactical shotguns and they would probably be ousting King Obama from office….

“The president’s action is a small but important step..”

Nope, it’s an end run around Congress and remember, the end does not justify the means.  It’s illegal and wrong and frankly shameful that you would promote it.

“to control sales of weapons at gun shows and over the internet that sidestep background checks. These “back door” gun dealers have effectively nullified the law requiring background checks by legitimate gun dealers by creating a black-market in firearms for those seeking to avoid background checks for whatever reason. The proliferation of weapons must be controlled.”

If this is the case then why do “mass shooters” not get their weapons at Gun Shows?  Why do virtually all of them go to a gun store and pass a background check?  This is simply untruthful dribble that has been fed to you and you are regurgitating it without doing any of your own research or thinking.

“It is difficult to see how this new law allowing persons with concealed handgun licenses (CHL) to openly carry firearms can accomplish anything other than cause people to feel threatened and intimidated.”

Let’s be clear.   Texas is the 45th state to allow this.  What does that tell you?  Have we had any cowboys in any of the other 44 states running around shooting each other with their sixguns?   The problem with the Bishop and other mindless liberals is that the do not understand Open Carry and because they are afraid of guns, they condemn it.

Open Carry took place for several reasons, none of which were so that people could “Cowboy up” and strap on their hog legs to scare people.  The two primary reasons were:

  1.  Rural Texans open carry on their own property (as the law allows) daily.  Guns are tools of their trade.  When they leave their property and go to the feed store or wherever, they needed to leave their guns in their trucks.  This was a major inconvenience and made no sense (unless you live in a Bishop’s mansion in Dallas.)
  2. Concealed Carry holders worried about breaking the law and “printing.”  This was against the law and was difficult for CHL holders to deal with and involved special holsters, clothing, and great care to make certain that they remained within the law.

Now both of these items are fixed.  Does this mean more people will have guns?  NO!  It means you might see them more often.  But the LTC is the same as the CHL except it does not need to be C (Concealed.)  So basically, no more guns, just guns more visible.  This ought not to scare anyone with a brain.  The guns were there before you just couldn’t see them.  Now you might be able to see them.  Big deal.

“Under the new law churches may prohibit CHL holders from carrying open or concealed weapons on church premises with appropriate signage”

As they could under the old law…

“This policy is rooted in the belief that our churches, schools and other places of worship are intended to be sanctuaries – holy sites where people come to pray and participate in the ministry of the Church.”

Awesome.  I’m sure the Dylan Roof’s of the world will see your 30.06 and 30.07 sign and turn right around… Gun Free Zones are specifically selected by criminals because you have made yourself and your employees easy targets.  Good luck with that.

“Let us pray that our legislators will see this as a human and not a political concern…”

Unlike the Bishop who has seen it as a political concern and has swallowed liberal gun control lies hook, line and sinker….

“so that gun violence can be mitigated through appropriate legislation…”

Which again, it never will be.  Laws need to be enforced if they are to be effective.  They are not enforced now.  Why would we think that more laws will fix this?  They won’t.  They will simply take away more freedoms from law abiding citizens.

“that allows us to live in a safe environment while respecting our Second Amendment rights.”

I’m very safe…  because of my Second Amendment rights.  It’s insulting for you to pretend that you actually respect the Second Amendment.
